Ronaldo rested for final Portugal qualifier

The Real Madrid star has been given the night off after helping his country seal their place at Euro 2016 with victory over Demark on Thursday

Cristiano Ronaldo has been withdrawn from the Portugal squad ahead of their final Euro 2016 qualifier against Serbia after they booked their place at the tournament.

Joao Moutinho's goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Denmark on Thursday to seal Fernando Santos's side's passage to the finals in France.

With the Seleccao's place at the top of Group I secure with a game to spare, Ronaldo, alongside Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho, will sit out Sunday's clash with Serbia.

The trio have been rested for the last qualifier, so Nice's 22-year-old winger Ricardo Pereira and Braga player Rui Fonte have been called up in order to replace the trio ahead of the weekend's match - neither player has featured for the national team before.

Ronaldo is his side's top goalscorer in the qualfying campaign, having scored five goals in the six matches he has played.
